La commune de La Chartre-sur-le-Loir, traversée par trois bras du Loir, propose des commerces variés dont quinze brocanteurs et antiquaires, également un hôtel-restaurant, plusieurs bars et restaurants, une maison médicale, des médecins, des dentistes, un vétérinaire, une pharmacie, une maison des services, un bureau de poste, un marché deux fois par semaine, des viticulteurs et des artisans ainsi que de nombreuses industries, maroquinerie, passementerie, un fabricant de radiateurs, l’usine Rustin (inventeur de la Rustine), en bref, près de soixante-dix enseignes pour moins de 1500 habitants.
À flancs de coteaux, La Chartre-sur-le-Loir, située en zone viticole, produit entre autres les AOC Jasnières et Coteaux-du-Loir.
Le tourisme y est une activité importante avec plusieurs gîtes, un camping municipal et un office de tourisme ouvert toute l’année.
Ses habitants ont pour gentilé les Chartrains.
